Call of Duty: Black Ops 2: Revolution DLC Review

The first DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is brought in the form of Revolution, a new DLC which gives the player access to four new multiplayer maps, a new zombies map, a new zombies game mode and for the first time in call of duty history a new bonus multiplayer weapon. Sounds Good? Well then here's the question. Is it worth it? This will be split up into 2 parts Multiplayer and Zombies.

MULTIPLAYER

The Revolution map pack comes with 4 new multiplayer maps called Hydro, Mirage, Grind and Downhill. The maps all have interesting designs especially Grind and Hydro.

Hydro is set in a water works plant in Pakistan with good close quarters engagements along the sides and long distance engagements along the middle. The key thing about Hydro is that it has a waterway which will periodically flood killing anyone caught inside there is a good warning to alert when it will flood so you will not be caught off guard.

Grind is set in a skate park in Venice Beach California and introduces curves into the environment making you feel less secure as you cannot use the walls for cover very easily as they are sloped. The map is not very small either which makes it great for games such as ground war. The map is filled with close quarters engagements all throughout the map.

Mirage is set in a luxury resort in the Gobi Desert in China and is covered with sand dunes which can be used for cover and to your advantage is cases of who is higher or who can be seen by the other. The map is the smallest of the four and has an empty pool on one side of the map and broken down vehicles on the other side of the map. The map has many good vantage points which snipers tend to use a lot.

Downhill is set in a ski resort in the French Alps the map is comprised of snow and buildings. Running down the middle of the map are the gondolas which can be used for cover but beware the gondolas are always moving and if you do not pay attention they will give you instant death. The map has many key vantage spots which snipers love to fight over.

For the first time in Call of Duty history a DLC has included a weapon. This weapon is called the peacekeeper SMG which is a hybrid of an assault rifle and a sub machine gun. The weapon has the fire rate and mobility of a sub machine gun with the range and damage of an assault rifle. The gun is well balanced and is sometimes challenging to use against the guns such as the PDW-57 and MSMC.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 review

Price:£40.49 (best price)
Platforms:Xbox, Playstation 3, Wii U and PC.
Activision's latest addition to the popular franchise is one of the most anticipated of 2012 with developer Treyarch making millions in the first week of release, the result of months of waiting. In this review we cover the main parts of the question should you buy this game.

Main Menu

The game's menu is easy to navigate giving you three options: Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies. Clicking on the Campaign option will present you with a simple menu asking you if you would like to continue your current mission, restart your current mission or start a new Campaign. The Multiplayer option will lead on to a menu asking you if you would like to play on Xbox live, System Link or Local with these options we also get the options menu for your sensitivity, invert axis, graphic and audio settings along with the in-game store where you can purchase map packs, avatars or the season pass.

Campaign

The Campaign is presented very well with good storyline which takes place in the not too far future of 2025 and cold war environments. There are many good elements of the campaign such as excellent character facial capture, good campaign time, in-game decisions which affect the outcome of your story and finally the strike force missions. The strike force missions are missions where you are put in control of a number of different units and are assigned various different tasks at various locations.

Although the concept sounds good the units did not really do anything and seemed to get killed a lot, the reason being they would only do one objective at a time, for example if they are going to a location they will attack units that stand in the way and not pick fights by themselves. They would only attack if commanded or if taking fire themselves. I found myself having to complete them on my own. So I ended up sending the units to one objective and clearing the area then to the next objective and so on. The Strike force missions will change the outcome of your campaign so try to complete them without losing any forces for that perfect campaign.

Multiplayer

What good is a call of duty game if it has no multiplayer? Well Black Ops 2 is no exception, whether you choose to dive straight into the action or practise in combat training, multiplayer mode gives you the ability to face other players around the world with 55 different ranks and 11 prestige levels you will have plenty to aim for. Brand new to Black Ops 2 is league play which places you in a team and lets you take part in several seasons of play with many different game modes. League play forces you to be more of a team player rather than focussing on your K/D. The multiplayer experience is good giving you access to a variety of weapons which you can put in your custom classes which has a new pick 10 system this means that every part of your loadout is given 1 point and you can mix and match different parts to make your custom class there is also the new wildcard system giving you the ability to break the rules of the loadout for example giving you three attachments on you weapon or taking up to six perks or having to lethal grenades there are many possibilities. The multiplayer is good and you will surely spend endless hours playing online.

Zombies

The zombies mode of Call of Duty:Black Ops 2 is back with the new tranzit mode where you must fight against waves of undead zombies but with a new twist the map is much bigger than a regular survival map with a bus to take you to all the stops in the map but it doesn't stop there the game also features new buildables such as a zombie trap, a zombie shield and a new weapon. There is also a new mode called grief which places you in games of 4 vs 4 where you can work together or strategically force the other players down but in the end only one team survives. Zombies is more fun when you are playing with friends and the new leaderboards mean you can compare your killing abilities with your friends.

Verdict

Black ops 2 is a fun game with lots of content such as a great campaign with lots of great moments, a good multiplayer experience with a lots of different ways to play and a great zombies experience to keep you going. I have to say that this is one of the best first person shooters I have ever played. I give this game a 9/10.
